North East Multicultural Market

The first North East Multicultural Market for the 2010 summer kicked off on Saturday July 24th.  After overcoming a couple of electrical problems, the vendors were up and cooking and residents eagerly lined up to view the crafts and taste the cuisine.

Vender tables offered homemade jewelry by Kaz Logan of Purple Turtle Jewelry and eco-friendly products from The Organic Oscars, presented by Ekaterina Nikiforova.  Choi Chul Hyek supplied Korean Gifts and Vera Prochazkova had a wide variety of decorative items for the home.  As well, greeting cards, cup cozies, and motivational rocks make by local youth were displayed, including the promotion of  the odd job board through LUSO’s Work It! program.  Clothing, arts and umbrellas gave those who attended lots to choose between.

A little rain interrupted our day but could not dampen our spirits.  Entertainment was provided by guitarists and vocalists Duane Lauzon and Tam Doung.  Many people enjoyed a plate or two of the fine cultural dishes from the various food vendors and mingled under one of the tents provided.  With options, such as the tantalizing Korean food supplied by Sun Hee Hwang and friends; the Ethiopian selections brought to us by Almaz Edubai & Zayed Ibrehim; a sausage overflowing with various toppings cooked up by Gourmet Hot Dogs, or simply a coffee and muffin from the NELCE table, no one went away hungry.

A visit by our Mayor, Anne Marie DeCicco-Best, added to the festivities and provided a great photo op for those enjoying the day.  Free prizes, graciously donated by local community businesses, were drawn throughout the day for those who attended the market.  Everyone had a great time!  If we can have this much fun in the rain, just imagine what the next market on August 28th will be like?!

It is amazing what can be accomplished when people come together for a common cause.  Many thanks, to volunteers and community members who worked hard to organize and put on this event, and to the people that participated in making it a success.
